Intervarsity Games kick off

TWO church-run institutions in the country have been urged to team up with other universities to participate in the Intervarsity games.
Vice-chancellor of the University of Goroka Dr Gairo Onagi made the call yesterday in Goroka at the official launching of the eighth bi-annual Intervarsity games at the National Sports Institute.
He said the Divine Word University (DWU) and Pacific Adventist University (PAU) were part of the family of higher learning institutions providing tertiary education to the future generations of PNG.
Onagi said therefore other universities were hopeful DWU and PAU to join them in the ninth bi-annual Intervarsity games in 2013.
In his opening remarks, Onagi welcomed the three participating universities, the University of Technology, University (Unitech), the University of Natural Resources Environment (UNRE) and the University of PNG (UPNG).
He called on them to play in the true spirit of sportsmanship.
Leading retailer in the highlands Bintangor Trading are the major sponsors of the UOG team while UPNG are sponsored by Steamships Trading Co.
The intervarsity games are played by staff and their spouses of the participating universities, which excludes students and outsiders.
The first sport played was a soccer match between Unitech and UPNG.
The Unitech men thrashed UOG 8-0 while UPNG women beat Unitech 3-2.
The games continues today and will conclude tomorrow afternoon.
Vudal University of Natural Resource and Environment won the last games played in Kokopo.
The University of Technology will host the next game in Lae in 2013.
