Investment in cities is for long term: Parkop

THE Government’s investment into Port Moresby and other major cities is for the long term, NCD Governor Powes Parkop says.
He said during grievance debate in Parliament on Friday that the Government was making a good investment for the people.
In response to criticisms about Port Moresby receiving more major infrastructure development than other cities, Parkop said cities and towns were critical to development for the people.
“This is where the government, business sector and the NGOs sit, they go and serve our rural people and help develop them,” he said.
“This is a trend that no country has successfully stopped.
“The rural urban migration, I am not against rural development, I’m just talking about reality in which in the history of the world, there is no such thing as human development.
“Although we have a lot of spending from the urban areas, we are investing in the future, right now as we speak Port Moresby’s population is over one million.
“Unless the government and parliament control and regulate people they will keep on flocking into Port Moresby, Lae and Mt Hagen
Parkop said some of the problems that the government was facing with  spending on the city of Port Moresby were legacy problems.
“I agree we must develop all the districts and the provinces as well. If we have enough money everyone should have even and progress together,” he said.
