Involve youths: UN

IT is important to involve young people as proactive agents, especially in advocating and implementing global goals, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Papua New Guinea Roy Trivedy says.
Speaking in the lead up to International Youth Day, Trivedy said: “In a country where almost 30 per cent of the population is between the age of ten and twenty-four, it is vital to engage young people as proactive agents for change especially in advocating and implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.”
He said the upcoming event (International Youth Day) would be an opportunity to recognise the important role of youths in the process.
“Let us empower young people with the resources, backing and space they need to create lasting change in our world. When we invest in youth, they can contribute to new markets, decent jobs, fair trade, sustainable housing, sustainable transport, and tourism and more opportunities that benefit the planet and people,” stated the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon.
According to a statement, this year marked the historical commencement of the Sustainable Development Goals which will serve as a milestone to transform the world in the next 15 years by 2030. To realise these global goals, the UN distinguishes young people as critical advocates, influencers, and agents of change. Young people’s energy, creativity and idealism can shape the globe into a healthier, safer, equitable and sustainable place.
United Nations in PNG, through its 14 resident agencies, has been supporting youth in the country, especially in the area of education, health and justice. To reinforce our commitment and to further support youth engagement, UN in PNG together with the National Capital District, Safe Motherhood Alliance and other partner agencies are organising the International Youth Day Event in Port Moresby on August 21.
