IOKEA villagers last week named their oval in Gulf after the late Sir Tore Lokoloko in recognition of his efforts as a former governor-general and community leader.
Sir Tore’s daughter Norma Wargem unveiled a billboard in his honour.
The oval — where the Sir Tore Lokoloko Schoolboys Rugby League competition is played —will now be called the Sir Tore Lokoloko Park.
“This competition was established to keep youngsters occupied and it has proven to be successful since 2015,” Tei Kariko Rugby League president Kouson Morehari.
He said the executive committee had appointed Thomas Opa to oversee the competition.
“This season, we involved Siviore Primary School from Miaru village and Oeapu Primary School from Sepoe,” Morehari said.
“This competition has the potential to produce talent at the rural level.
“These are village youths and school students playing in this competition which has attracted a lot of interest from the community.
“From the schoolboys league, players then play in the open competition which includes the A-grade division.”
Morehari said the Lokoloko family had been supportive of rugby league in the village.
