IRC doing well in revenue collection, says Koim

THE Internal Revenue Commission is “doing really well” so far in terms of its revenue collection responsibility, says commissioner-general Sam Koim.
Koim did not mention any amount and only said the IRC had “exceeded expectations”.
“We are doing really well, beyond expectations. I am very happy,” he said.
“We have just exceeded our half-year target.”
Koim put it down to “interventions carried out by the IRC”.
“Some of the interventions we have introduced are effortless interventions – just leakages that should have been addressed,” he said.
“But the efforts that we have been putting in, like some of the major projects we are initiating, when completed, will give a monumental result.”
Koim said the challenge was the skills set. “Finding the skill sets which have the ability to move into the deeper realm of seeing things, seeing the invisible and doing the impossible,” he said.
“That kind of thinking is really a challenge.”
“That sort of skill set is not found in the country.”
Koim also said the public service pay structure was “frustrating”.
“I don’t mind paying someone higher than my salary as long as that person brings in an extra K1 million or K10 million,” he said.
“But the current pay structure does not allow for that.
“That’s the sad side of things.”
