THE Duke of York local level government (LLG) in Kokopo, East New Britain, is preparing to roll out the healthy island concept to households on the island.
The programme started last week with a week-long training in the Nakukur ward facilitated by environmental health officer Moses Henei.
The healthy island concept is a programme under the East New Britain health authority’s new plan structure 2021-2030, a focus over 10 years. Provincial health manager Paskalis Kinakava said the provincial health authority had been vocal in emphasising the concept.
The programme failed in some wards.
Kinakava said the health sector had set the pace for other sectors in the provincial government to adopt government ward policies and incorporating them in their sector plans and strategies.
Henei said many people showed interest in the training and they would continue with similar training in other wards on the island. There are 16 cell indicators in the concept.
“These areas include access to clean water, health services, education, good roads and transport, clean environment, access to cash income and others,” Henei said.
