ITISORA Broncos booked a date with Pora Eels in Sunday’s Chris Haiveta Cup grand final after they beat Highway Cowboys 32-8 in the preliminary final at the Lese Oalai Oval in Gulf last weekend.
The victory saw the Broncos avenge their loss in last season’s grand final of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League-sanctioned competition which is sponsored by Gulf Governor Haiveta.
Iopoe Kangaroos will face Siroii Raiders and Broncos will meet Cowboys in the women’s and B-Grade grand finals respectively.
League president Joe Wakiva said that due to Haiveta’s political commitments in Vanimo, the grand finals had been deferred to Sunday.
The Eels are from the neighboring Lese Ilave and the Broncos are from Lese Oalai.
The Broncos were leading 16-4 when the match was abandoned 15 minutes in due to spectator invasion on the previous weekend.
With the experience of captain Martin Kouoru alongside Trevor Toru, Bosco Chris, Augustine Mero, Ben Kose and Patrick Ouri Wakiva, the Broncos were too good for the Eels in the remaining minutes.
The Broncos dominated possession despite the absence of experienced pair Ilave Sapea and Mark John as they went on to shatter the Cowboys’ hopes of retaining the title.
