A 20-year-old woman from East New Britain has tested positive for the Covid-19, bringing the national total of confirmed cases to 656.
According to a statement from the National Pandemic Response Centre, the woman had returned by boat with others from West New Britain and was tested at the point of entry.
She did not show symptoms at the time but swab samples returned positive.
All other passengers on the boat tested negative.
Meanwhile, in Mt Hagen, health authorities said a health worker and her three children also tested positive.
Western Highlands Health Authority chief executive officer David Vorst said the senior nurse, her 20-year-old daughter, 19-year-old and nine-year-old sons tested positive.
Vorst said contact tracing was underway especially in the hospital premises.
“The family will remain in isolation until all have negative results,” Vorst said.
He said the youngest son had attended school on Monday.
“The Division of Education in Western Highlands has also been advised. Health promotion teams are mobilising both on the hospital campus and at the school to identify close contacts and test them.”
Vorst said there was no need to panic.
“Wash your hands regularly with sanitiser or soap, observe social distancing at all times, keeping at least 1.5m apart and cough into your flexed elbow,” he said.
