JACK’S of PNG has created an opportunity for 30-year-old local artist and designer Israel Clyde Nabur to feature his designs on clothing now on the shop’s shelves.
Jack’s of PNG, a partner of City Pharmacy Limited (CPL), started the design competition in 2020.
CPL chief executive officer Navin Raju said last week that the primary aim of the competition “is to provide a platform for artists to showcase their skills and abilities and create a source of income”.
“We aim to inspire and support all of you designs in nurturing your creative spirit and design endeavors,” he said.
“Your distinct visions and skills contribute significantly to enriching our community.”
Nabur said he had never monetised his talent before and the avenue created by Jack’s of PNG forced him to go full time.
He was given K17,100 to help him get there.
He said: “I am from Morobe, in the Siassi Island. I have been a design artist since I was little. It is a talent. I did not attend any art school. This is the first time to do it on clothing. I am based in Lae.”
He said he was complete his third year at the Balob Teachers College last year but due to financial problems, he opted out.
“But right now, art is big. I am thinking of applying for art school, maybe at the University of PNG. This is the first time I am going to make money from my talent.”
He said his mask design was inspired by the Tumbuan.
It has significance among the Morobeans and the West New Britain people, often worn during community celebrations like festivals. “My design, particularly the Tumbuan, draws inspiration from the Siassi Island.
“The intricate design incorporates elements such as wave patterns, a person on a canoe, a fish, traditional mat and coconut basket weaving motifs.
“These components collectively portray the modest lifestyle of the coastal and island communities, encapsulating the essence of simplicity in their daily lives.”
