South Pacific Brewery concluded a month-long training on the responsible service of alcohol for Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) students in the National Capital District last week.
They were the fifth batch of students from various hospitality companies in Port Moresby who possess a Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality.

Brewery corporate affairs Manager John Nilkare said the training programme and the partnership with APTC started five years ago.
The brewery saw the need to be “a responsible producer” by curbing irresponsible drinking and binge drinking.

“This is an important training which is part of our value as a company,” Nilkare said.
“As industry leaders, we value responsible consumption of our products, and that safety is always paramount.”

He added that irresponsible drinking and binge drinking were becoming a big problem in the country.
“We want to make sure to minimise those problems from our end,” Nilkare said.
“That is why we reached out to APTC to assist bar tenders and service staff in hotels around Port Moresby to equip them with the necessary skill-set when servicing customers with our products.”

Meanwhile, APTC partnership and coalition facilitator Rachael Abo said the training also gave students the opportunity to put into practice what they had learnt in college.
“With this training, these students now have lifelong skill and knowledge to attend any working environment in PNG or abroad,” she said.
