POLICE have urged the 30 escapees from Baisu jail to surrender themselves.

Enga provincial police commander Acting Supt George Kakas said police had the names and know the whereabouts of the escapees.

Kakas said Engans were giving information to the Wabag police station on where the escapees were hiding.

He said this after 31 remandees from Enga and two from Western highlands and Jiwaka attacked prison guards on Dec 31 at Baisu jail in Western highlands and escaped.

He said one was captured two weeks ago in Porgera.

“I want to appeal to others still at large to surrender. Enga is not like Lae or Port Moresby where you can hide in the settlements,” he said.

Kakas said Enga was a small province and people reported criminals hiding in their area to police.

He said there was no way they would escape.

“If you want to surrender, call me on 71173573 and I will come alone and pick you up. We will not charge you with escaping from lawful custody,” he said.

He is appealing to other Engans to call him directly if they see any escapees in their area.

Kakas warned people harbouring the escapees that if police caught them, they would be arrested and charge with harbouring.

“Don’t think that you are hiding, people are watching you,” he said.
