JAPAN and Fiji now have two new heads of diplomatic missions in Papua New Guinea after Governor-General Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae accepted their letters of credence yesterday.
The new Japanese Ambassador to PNG is Kuniyuki Nakahara while the new Fijian High Commissioner to PNG is Mosese Tikoitoga.
Receiving them in two separate ceremonies yesterday, Sir Bob promised them PNG’s cooperation in enhancing the diplomatic relations.
Speaking to Nakahara, Dadae said PNG and Japan had enjoyed a peaceful and friendly relationship since engaging in diplomatic relations in 1975.
“We share values of democracy, mutual respect for sovereign equality and territorial integrity, the rule of law, peace and security,” he said. Sir Bob told Nakahara that his (Nakahara) appointment came at a time when PNG and Japan’s bilateral relationship was growing stronger.
Sir Bob acknowledged Japan as a development partner of PNG.
“Japan is contributing to PNG’s overall economic development and growth, in areas of health, education, infrastructure and transport, among others.”
Sir Bob also acknowledged Fiji’s leadership at the COP 23 (UN Climate Conference) in 2017 where PNG and Fiji stood together in a campaign against the effects of climate change.
“Climate change is a global issue of mutual concern, and I congratulate Fiji for its tremendous efforts in this area,” he said.
“I assure you of PNG’s continued support to Fiji in addressing issues of climate change,” he told Tikoitoga. Let me assure you that the Government of PNG stands ready to accord you the necessary support.”
