MORE than 2600 Papua New Guineans have gone through degree programmes and short training stints provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).
The agency’s programme officer, Allan Eko, said 2600 took short-term courses while 32 pursued the master’s degree programme.
The 2019 Jica alumni workshop was held in Port Moresby on Friday and attended by former recipients of the scholarship.
Jica has been offering training programmes to various government agencies as a form of technical cooperation that it gives to PNG every year.
The Jica PNG office decided to construct a 2019 Jica alumni work plan which lays out actions to take in streaming former and current trainers into their working groups.
This would enable them to make recommendations which the Jica PNG office can use.
The long-term training programme includes the Pacific leaders’ educational assistance for developing states, which is a scholarship programme offered to government agencies annually.
Officers from various government agencies are given opportunities to peruse their master’s programme in their fields of interest.
Applicants are expected to align their research topics with existing government priorities to ensure that upon their return from studies, they can contribute meaningfully to national development.
