THE Jimi District Development Authority in Jiwaka has undertaken to supply food, fuel and learning materials to the Kol High School.
The district hired a helicopter to transport food and fuel costing K140,000 to the school to be used during the first term. It will spend the amount in the next two terms.
The school is located in a remote part of the province. The road is unusable during bad weather. Because of the distance, the school has been finding it difficult to get food and fuel.
Jimi MP Wake Goi offered to help the school because he said education was most important to the people. He wanted the school to reach secondary status.
He said students would for the first time have brown rice and tinned meat in their meal.
He said Kol was the only high school in Jimi and because of the bad road and its remoteness, education had been affected.
“We used to have only three classes of grades nine and 10. This year it has increased to five. I’m looking at adding two or three more classes to reach secondary status.”
He said a new school science laboratory would be put on tender.
Some organisations have offered to build the school library and more classrooms.
“My vision is to make this one of the modern schools in the country with television and equipped with the latest technologies,” Goi said.
He has also subsidised airfares for students who only have to pay K30 to travel to their families during the holidays.
