Those caught involved in the growing, selling or smoking and drinking marijuana and homebrew in Jiwaka will be fined K1,000 or face up to six months in jail, police have warned.
Acting Jiwaka police commander Billy Kombel said drugs and alcohol were the major causes of social disorder in the province.
On Monday, police caught two young men in possession of marijuana.
They appeared before the Minj district court on Tuesday, where they were each ordered to pay a fine of K1,000 or face six months in prison.
Kombel said Mek Paul 25, from Kol in Jimi, who was wanted for being heavily involved in growing and selling marijuana, was picked up at Wara Mombol after being set up.
He said Paul had with him 10kg of dried and packed marijuana.
Kombel said a Brian Kants, 20, from Munump village, Banz, was arrested at the movie theatre in Banz.
Kants had in his possession 5kg of dried marijuana, he said.
Police raided and uprooted 90 mature marijuana plants at Kilip, near Banz, where the suspect fled.
Kombel said police were fed up with the social problems caused by the abuse of homebrew and drugs.
He said police would not tolerate drugs and homebrew in Jiwaka.
He challenged those involved to surrender.
