Christmas and New Year operations in Jiwaka started at 6pm yesterday with police out in force to ensure the festive season is trouble-free.
These operations
will later merge with the pre-election operations and end in March.
Acting provincial police commander Billy Kombel said although they were down on manpower and resources, police would make sure the festive season was peaceful.
He said among other issues, alcohol and drugs were a problem in the province and
police were out to ensure that these did not cause “unnecessary problems”.
He said with Jiwaka embracing developmental changes, law and order were of paramount importance for the progress of the young province.
He said the people had to work with police to ensure the province was peaceful and had no law and order
problems.
Kombel said the province had been quiet so far and called on the people to maintain that.
He called on the people to celebrate the festive season in their own villages and communities.
Kombel called on licensed liquor sellers to operate within their normal trading hours during the festive season.
He said if they wanted to extend their operating hours, they had to apply for pemission.
He said all licensed liquor dealers were to buy their alcohol from the three authorised dealers in Jiwaka and Western Highlands, and not from other provinces.
He said those caught doing so by police would have their licences confiscated.
He called on those involved in the illegal buying and selling of alcohol to stop as
they were breaking the law.
