COUNTING for the Jiwaka local level government elections begins today, with the declaration of some winners expected this afternoon.

Provincial election manageress Rosie Pandie said counting had been scheduled for last weekend but had been deferred because of the remoteness of some areas.

Pandie said counting for the two LLGs, South Waghi and Minj, would be held at the Minj police station.

She said counting for the rest of the wards would be held at the Banz police station and presidents would be declared later.

“The campaign periods and polling ran smoothly despite minor hiccups which happen at every election,” she said.

Pandie said Jiwakans had behaved responsibly, with only a few people creating minor problems.

“I want to thank police and staff for their work in completing polling and campaigning well,” she said.

“My appeal to the people is to accept the results and let the normal election processes take place.”

She thanked the candidates and the general public for generally conducting themselves well during the campaign and polling periods.

The provincial government made available K500,000 to assist with the LLG elections in the province.
