SAINT Joseph’s International Catholic School students are preparing for their rugby union festival scheduled for June 15.

School head of sports John Agovai said all classes were preparing for the festival at the Sir John Guise multi-purpose oval.

The school will use the festival to select squads for the National Capital District schools rugby competition in term three.

The NCD schools rugby competition was revived last year following the introduction of the Rugby4Schools programme initiated by the Australian-funded Pacific in Union under the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union.

St Joseph’s International Catholic School was one of the pilot schools introduced to the programme with seven other city schools.

This year 10 new schools will join, including Kopkop College, Gerehu Primary, Gordon’s International, TEMIS, Kilakila Secondary, Marianville Secondary, Badihagwa Secondary, Boroko Primary, Ted Diro Primary and Taurama Primary.

“Classes have been challenged to organise their own sponsors for uniforms, tents, refreshment and their own training times outside physical education lessons for rugby preparations. The response has been very good,” Agovai said.

“Our parental support is very good and we are looking forward to yet another very successful rugby festival this year.”

The school has 34 teams in the festival.

The green level – consisting of six teams (6–9 years), blue level consists of 12 teams (10–12 yrs) and gold level with16 teams (13–16 years).

Pacific in Union regional development officer Douglas Guise and in-country manager Paul Joseph will be helping the children.
