JOURNALISTS from Highlands region attended a half-day course on first aid and the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The training was conducted yesterday at the ICRC’s head office at Rabiamul, outside Mt Hagen city, and attended by reporters from Southern Highlands, Enga, and Western Highlands.
It was an informative meeting explaining the work of ICRC and its mandate that would facilitate a better understanding, maintain constructive dialogue and collaboration with various media groups in the region.
The head of Sub Delegation of ICRC, Manish Das, told the reporters that the organisation was based in the region because of tribal fighting.
He said that the ICRC’s exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war or internal violence like tribal fighting and provide them with assistance.
Das said that it also endeavored to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles.
He said that in the Highlands region, ICRC help people affected by tribal fighting with essential relief items, provide water supply, health centre, and provide economic grants for those victims who cannot help themselves to go into farming, piggery, poultry and other mobile businesses.
Das said that for the big earthquake last year, it was not their mandated task to help, but they intervened and helped 3300 families affected by the natural disaster.
He said that they also help family support centres.
