Judges, associates get training

WAIGANI-BASED judges of the Supreme and National courts and their associates underwent a day’s training on Friday on a new case management system called the Integrated Electronic Case Management System (IECMS). Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika said the training was organised for the judges to get into the IECMS data base system so that they could use it in disposing off the cases. “Once the Port Moresby-based judges are literate on IECMS and we feel confident that it’s properly grounded then we will roll it out to the rest of the country,” he said. Sir Gibbs said the total cost for implementing the system into the judiciary was K4 million. He is expecting the judiciary to be paperless in two to three years time. “Gradually, paper will be phased out once the judges know how to use the IECMS and only the electronic system of case filing and management will be there,” he said. Sir Gibbs said training and budget were the main challenges faced in implementing the IECMS. “We think we can achieve what we want to achieve with a little bit more work and training,” he said. “Getting all of us be able to type and access the data base system, our problems will become lesser.”
