Judiciary appoints eight new magistrates

PNG’s magisterial service plans to have 120 magistrates serving in the courts by 2015.
This was revealed during the swearing-in of eight new magistrates in Port Moresby yesterday officiated by deputy Chief Justice Gibbs Salika.
It brings to 92 the total number of magistrates in the
country, 16 of whom are females.
Also present at the swearing-in ceremony were the Chief Magistrate Jack August and his deputy Iova Geita.
Geita said the magistracy aimed to have 120 magistrates serving in the Magisterial Services by 2015, as was
required by the government’s plans.
The eight new magistrates sworn in yesterday included two females – Kari Poawai from Central and Josephine Kilage from Chimbu.
Their male colleagues are Michael W Apie’e (Eastern Highlands), Daniel Wettao (Enga), Vincent Agusave (Eastern Highlands), Garry Unjo (Southern Highlands), Stanley Attito (Eastern Highlands) and Benjamin Tanewan (West New Britain).
