A SUCCESSFUL 18-hole junior tournament was staged at the Lae Golf Club recently, attracting 23 competitors in the Morobe capital.
The tournament had the backing of sponsors Niugini Electrical Company (NEC) and Lae Inland Logistics as well as other companies in Lae.
Pacific Industries sponsored the match day.
Prime Minister James Marape, during a visit to Bulolo last month, played a round before returning to Port Moresby.
He assured the club of his support for junior development in Lae.
Lae Inland Logistics general manager Kerry Brett told The National that the junior programme had been running for three months and was open to youngsters from the ages of five to 17 years.
“We started three months ago with six children and now have 38 children,” he said.
“This tournament is the first main competition and is played under the normal golf rules.”
NEC group general manager Barry Finall said as a parent, he wanted to encourage children to take part in something different during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We have (Covid-19) restrictions, but golf is one of the things that we can get out there and still enjoy, get exercise and move around,” he said.
“Lae Golf Club needs to bring through our junior players.
“As parents, we decided to get together and get these kids out on the course, exercising and moving them away from electronic games and be more active in life.”
Finall said they had 38 registered juniors with costs covered by contributions from business houses and individuals.
He said the tournament had 23 players taking part last Thursday and the club had been a fantastic supporter alongside Inland Logistics, BNG Trading, JBB Investment and other backers.
He also thanked NEC for providing shirts for the junior golfers.
