K1 million allocated to speed up work at Banab Bridge

The Department of Works and Transport has allocated K1 million to speed up work on the collapsed Banab Bridge in North Coast, Madang.
Department Secretary David Wereh, pictured, said the money would be given to the contractor engaged to reconstruct the bridge.
The Banab Bridge collapsed under the weight of a semi-trailer carrying an excavator on January 4.
The bridge links Madang and Matugar village towards Bogia.
Wereh said work on the bridge would be a priority for the department this month and next.
Works and Transport Minister Michael Nali said he went see the bridge.
The Banab Bridge known to many as the SP Bridge was constructed in 1962.
Meanwhile, a bypass created from Banan village to Wasab and Marugar villages was costly for passengers and motorists.
They pay almost K200 each at three different sections of the bypass.
