K10mil allocated for coronavirus

TREASURER Ian Ling-Stuckey told Parliament that cabinet had approved K10 million to help prevent coronavirus from entering the country.
Ling-Stuckey said cabinet met last week and approved the release of the funds.
“It does take time for the funds to be released but the respective government departments and stakeholders need to sit down and work out exactly what those costings would be,” he said.
“I understand that’s underway and it’s not as fast as I would have preferred it but I’m on standby to keep pushing that.”
Ling-Stuckey said at the last budget management committee meeting last Tuesday a request was made by the Health Department and cabinet approved the amount to address this.
“We decided that while waiting for the department to discuss what amounts would be, we agreed to release the money,” he said.
On the question of whether the reduction in commodity prices could affect the economy and the budget, Ling-Stuckey said the honest answer was that it would.
“At this stage it’s early days, we need to wait for the data to come in and we will be monitoring this very closely.
“Let us not panic with what is happening with a serious health issue. Let’s be vigilant,” Ling-Stuckey said.
“I will be tabling a statement in Parliament next week and if there are any dates that we receive I’m happy to inform the House.”

  • Please PNGans, I would just like to stress this for each and everyone of us citizens of this GOD blessed and resourceful Nation of ours, PNG and our Parliamentarians especially.
May we all please, take this health issue into serious consideration and put our focus into it and try to spend, invest or fund more into the fight to prevent it from entering our country coz it’ll be more too late to do that once it enters our country.
Remember, we aren’t First World Nation but Third World therefore, as the saying goes, PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE, thanks..

  • I am yet to know how to avoid the virus, the public must be educated on prevention method, how far are awareness reached rural areas since I am from the town and don’t know how to prevent it.
