ABOUT K160 million in grants from the European Union (EU) will be used to build more police stations and improve the village court system, Justice Minister Byran Kramer says.
He told people at the launching of a EU-Papua New Guinea partnership for good governance programme on Friday that it would help clean out corruption in the force to enable better service to the people and in village courts.
“The budget support from EU will create more stations of excellence for the police force in the specific regions, improve functions of village court system by investing on equipment, infrastructure and strengthening the Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac),” Kramer said.
He said the committee set up to have all the key stakeholders from National Planning, EU, police and Icac to review the existing programme and look at specific activities and issues to be addressed.
Kramer said within this programme, a “PNG anti-corruption project” was supported by the United Nations using funds made available by EU, both the United Nations Development Programme and United Nations Office on Drug and Crime to support its task of fighting corruption.
