A NEW police band hall was opened by State Enterprise Minister William Duma and Police Minister William Onglo in Port Moresby yesterday.
It cost DataCo K2.28 million to build the hall, provide housing, equipment and uniform for band members.
DataCo chief executive officer Paul Komboi said he had an agreement with former police commissioner Gari Baki regarding the Kila Police Barracks.
“Today marks the end of that journey for us to compensate the police department for allowing us to use their area,” he said.
“We are handing over the police band hall, instruments, improvements and developments we have done at the Kila Police Barracks.
“It took us three years to put together the facilities in the barracks.” The other State agencies using the area are Water PNG and PNG Power.
Onglo said the facility would be looked after by police officers.
“The band is an icon set up in 1939 and we are grateful for the support,” he said.
Duma said he had asked DataCo to ensure there were new facilities for the barracks.
