K250mil needed for 30 schools

MADANG will need K250 million to build 20 new high schools and 10 vocational schools in the next five years, says provincial education director Moses Sariki.
He was responding to National Planning and Monitoring Minister Richard Maru who told a medium-term development conference on Friday in Madang that only 5000 students in Mamose could continue to the secondary school level every year because of lack of space.
Sariki said Madang had been facing the problem over the past 10 years. The only primary schools are at Anul, Gusap and Megiar.
The Sumgilbar High School near Mangem Manam Care Centre is yet to be completed. There is an investigation into how a K6 million funding allocated two years was used.
Sumkar leader Nick Mare said the completion of the school could have catered for more students and the high number of students missing out on spaces could have decreased.
Sariki said he would need the assistance of Madang’s six MPs and Governor Peter Yama to build the 30 new schools in the next five years.
