A section of the road from Tagitagi ward 2 to Wairiki 4 in the Toma-Vunadidir LLG of Gazelle, East New Britain, under construction.

THE two kilometres of road from Tagitagi ward 2 to Wairiki ward 4 in the Toma-Vunadidir local level government (LLG) of Gazelle, East New Britain, is already making a difference.
The K2 million road project is co-funded by the provincial government and the district.
According to Toma-Vunadidir LLG president Robert Mati, the road section from Bitakapuk would just need patching because it was still in good condition and had a few potholes while the road from the Tagitagi 2 boundary would be resealed.
He said the road had not been maintained since it was built in the 1980s.
“The road corridor is always in a bad state and when it rains, some PMVs don’t not operate because of poorly-maintained roadways,” he said.
Mat said the road was prepared for resealing and maintenance several years ago but work was not completed, leaving the road in an exposed state and poor drainage.
He said a better road would mean improved services to the people and accessibility.
Mati thanked Governor Nakikus Konga and the Gazelle development authority for initiating the resealing of the road.
“The people are very happy as this road was neglected for years,” he said.
