New facilities at the Enga Teachers’ College (ETC) are expected to give the college a modern look, principal Michael Homingu says.
Homingu said a dining hall and male and female dormitories, costing about K33 million, were being built by HBS Construction.
“At the same time, work is
progressing on the construction of a three-floor staff house.
“Three people will sleep in each floor, a total of nine staff,” he said.
“Barrick Niugini Ltd from Porgera is funding the construction of the staff house.
“Our school, which is embarking on promoting academic excellence, is looking at exciting times head.”
Homingu founded the Melanesia Nazarene Teachers College in Jiwaka and the Enga Teachers College.
He said infrastructure development at the school would take ETC to the next level.
“At ETC, we emphasise professional teacher training. Our staff and lecturers are
highly disciplined, committed and dedicated,” he said.
“We want to be the best teacher training institution in the country. We do not to entertain complacency.”
Homingu said to enrol at ETC, students must meet the entry requirement, grade point average of 2.3.
He applauded the new online selection system for grade 12 school leavers which, he said, gave a fair chance to the best-performing students to study at institutions like ETC.
“The online system is very good because it is corrupt-free. No one can enter an institution through the back door like in the past,” he said.
“This system does automatic selection where there is no bias or manipulation of the selection process.
“We have also seen the disparity faced by certain provinces and I recommended that there should be some changes made in the selection software to ensure consideration is also given to disadvantaged provinces or remoteness, gender equality and others.”
