K73 million allocated for border posts

THE Government has allocated K73 million to construct 10 border posts between the country and Indonesia.
This was according to Papua New Guinea Defence Force Commander Maj-Gen Gilbert Toropo yesterday.
“I take great pleasure to thank the Government in appropriating K73 million to construct 10 border outposts along our PNG/Indonesian border for the first time in our country’s history since Independence,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Maj-Gen Toropo said giving prominence to the country’s border security by building security that will prevent illegal activities coming through the land border was important.
“These border posts will ensure effective security of not only the PNGDF presence but other security agencies to be co-located, so, we maintain a comprehensive security presence and effective control of our border,” he said.
“A secure border ensures a safer and secure PNG.”

  • The PNGDF Commander woke up from his slumber and immediately realised the need to have these border posts built only because of the potential incurrence by COVID-19 through the PNG/Indonesian border. Is COVID-19 the only security risk now or were there other security risks at the border before the corona virus?

This is an important security measure for any country in the world sharing borders with another and people like the commander waited until corona virus to make that decision. This should have been planned, from their security risk assessments, with budget allocations from the government over a period of time (medium to long term) to completely establish these posts. Do we have incompetent and under-performing people in high places, like that of the PNGDF Commander?
