K800,000 collected from issuing of police clearances

THE Government has collected more than K800,000 from issuing police clearance character certificates in National Capital District (NCD) this year, according to Assistance Commissioner of Police, (ACP) Crime, Hodges Ette.
He said the police was dependent on state funding to enforce law and order for safe and peaceful communities.
ACP Ette said, however, that there was potential to earn revenue for the government.
“The Finance Department collected over K800,000 from the K65 fee imposed for the police clearance certificates at the beginning of the year,” he said.
“The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary are in the business of spending Government money because it is not a business entity to make revenue for the country, but indirectly it ensures that the Government makes money.”
ACP Ette said the receipts from the police clearance form made on average K9,000 per working day in NCD alone.
He said the fees imposed for the clearance certificate would depend on the type of category a person was applying.
“K65 will be appropriate if you are trying to get a police clearance to apply for a security position and it might cost K1,000 for a clearance form to apply for a head of department position,” Ette said.
The fees imposed by police depend on the different categories and purpose of applying for a clearance form.
