Kabwum celebrates arrival of Gospel

MOROBE’s Sombongan Kikefung under the Evangelical Lutheran Church of PNG (ELCPNG) Ukata district in Kabwum celebrated 100 years of the arrival of the Gospel into the area, recently.
The Sombongan Parish covers five parishes, of which Desaim parish was the host, and they are from the Deyamos and Selepet local level governments in Kabwum.
Morobe Governor Luther Wenge attended the gathering on March 23 with his delegates to show that the provincial government was working closely with churches.
Wenge chartered MV Ialibu (Lutheran Shipping) from Lae to Wasu in Tewae-Siassi to transport the Lutheran believers who were residing outside the district to attend the event. From Wasu, they were transported through PMVs to Kabwum.
He highlighted the history of how the Gospel reached Morobe, disseminated and transformed the province, and later it reached the Highlands as well as other parts of the country.
“My heart is for my people, that’s why I travel to rural areas of Morobe despite the mountains, weather and distance to meet my people, whether it is for church or government work,” Wenge stated.
“The gospel changed many of our forefathers, and it also enlightened our mindset to see and understand things clearly.
“And it was through the gospel of Christ that changed the country.”
He said where the government services and development is not reaching the rural population, at least the church is there to serve the people.
“Therefore, everyone should hold on to the Gospel of God through their hearts, minds, and spirits and not only speak it,” Wenge added.
He then provided financial help for the people to continue doing God’s work.
The people thanked Wenge and his delegates through singing and dancing, and presenting gifts to show their appreciation that his presence made the event a memorable one.
