PAPUA New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) president John Kapi Natto has praised his executives for reviving the National Club Championships.
“The level of skills which have been displayed over the past two days at the Pacific Institute of Leadership and Governance Oval has shown that there’s consistency from the member associations,” said Kapi Natto, who attended the Southern Club Championships in Port Moresby over the weekend.
“The championships have been idle for over two decade and is now being revived to strengthen competitions.
“The championships are only allowed for PNGFA’s 18 member associations to compete in and there are challenges but they will be identified after the completion of the finals so that we can work on solutions to improve from next year.
“We must also have more women’s team competing and each member association must push for women’s football.”
“The main challenge is finding good sponsorship for the National Club Championships.
“Hopefully, we get a sponsor next year to make the competition bigger and better, and see it played annually.”
Kapi Natto wants to see clubs rewarded with trophies, including cash prizes and some other incentives to motivate each member association to produce top clubs.
The Highlands, New Guinea Islands (NGI) and Southern regions have played their regional qualifiers. Mamose kicks off today.
Mungkas (men) and Wantoks (women) have qualified to represent Southern, and Kimbe Bay Mates (men) and Mix Mates (women) for NGI. Highlands are yet to confirm their winners. The National Club Championships will be held in Port Moresby in September.
