Papua New Guinea Football Association president John Kapi Natto has encouraged Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League champions Lae City to be ambassadors of the country in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Champions League which kicks off this weekend.
He was on hand to see off City in Port Moresby.
Kapi Natto said the stage was much bigger at the regional level.
However, the president said he believed in City to make PNG proud against Vanuatu’s Malampa Revivors, the Solomon Islands’ Henderson Eels and Fiji’s Lautoka in Group B.
Kapi Natto said the OFC was different from the local scene and it was where City not only represented their franchise owners and Morobe.
He said City were representing the whole country.
Kapi Natto said all differences were put aside and the Champions League was City could show their potential to the whole region.
He urged City to give their best to progress to the next stage of the Champions League which should be the underlying motive.
Kapi Natto said despite Hekari United hosting Group A at the same time, both teams were expected to have the backing of PNG to overcome the first hurdle of the regional tournament.
“I wish the players, coaching and management team all the best luck, “Kapi Natto said.
City head coach Peter Gunemba thanked Kapi Natto.
He also conveyed City’s best wishes to Hekari as the NSL ladder leaders look to make it past the group stage.
Lae play their first match against Malampa Revivors on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Hekari host New Zealand’s Eastern Suburbs, New Caledonia’s Hienghène Sport and Vanuatu’s Galaxy.
All the Group A matches will be played in Port Moresby.
