THE manhunt for escapee William Kapris Nanua and another prisoner has been scaled down but the shoot-to-kill order by the prison boss stands.

But Correctional Services Commissioner Martin Balthazar said it did not mean that they had given up on recapturing Kapris.

“We are still working on his recapture but the operation conducted (during the escape two weeks ago) has been scaled down,” he said.

“We have now a team of prison officers working closely with the police to hunt down Kapris and we will eventually catch up with him.”

He said his “shoot to kill” order remained and that the operation would use internal resources from the department.

Kapris, serving 30 years for armed robbery, and convicted killers Raphael Walimini and Michael Warangu, walked out of the maximum security facility at Bomana on May 14 armed with a pistol and carrying mobile phones.

Warangu had since died after being shot.

Balthazar said the female prison officer accused of aiding the three to escape would be appearing in court.

Formal investigation into the Bomana maximum security facility will begin with the terms of reference already drawn up, he said.
