PAPUA New Guinea men’s head coach Warren Moon says he is willing to give opportunities to players across the country to be considered for Kapuls selection, however, the onus is on them to raise their level of football.
Moon said he was aware of numerous commentaries from the public on selections for the PNG Kapuls side and the requirements used. “People have their opinions, but I could easily challenge any comment or opinion that a player from a certain region could come in and represent the national team and perform at a higher level than the current crop of players given their obvious lack of football activity and fitness,” Moon told The National.
“I understand there is always a lot of commentary from the public about selection of players and where we select from, who we select and do not select.
“But for me it’s clear what is the requirement for anyone wanting to be eligible for selection in the national team right now.
Moon said he was willing to give all players in PNG an opportunity to be selected.
“If it’s learnt and if you want to be eligible for selection for the national team and play international football, you need to step up and improve your levels physically,” he said.
“This is the challenge for all of us now to raise the standards of how we train and condition our players to be better prepared.”
Meanwhile, he said his coaching team were planning and preparing for the OFC Men’s Nations Cup in a months’ time in Vanuatu.
“Our intention is to play at least one friendly before we head to Vanuatu for the Nations Cup.”
