PAPUA New Guinea have suffered a 4-0 loss to Central African Republic in their final Fifa Series clash on Monday night at the Race Course International Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The Kapuls had about three shots on goal in the opening fifteen minutes through midfielder Yagi Yasasa but after that, the African side dominated possession to lead 3-0 into the break before adding a winner in the 79th minute.
Coming off a scoreless draw against the hosts Sri Lanka last Friday, head coach Warren Moon said the team went into the game aware that they might not win the game but had hoped to gain experience against a quality side.
“The reality is we played a team that was far superior to us right in all areas. This was part of our learning process and we have gained so much from these two matches in Sri Lanka,” Moon told The National yesterday. “I am proud of our boys’ effort and their discipline sticking to the game plan but now we must look to demand more and expect more from our players when they return to training.”
Just eleven minutes were on the clock when Central African Republic took the lead, Christian-Theodor Yawanendji-Malipangou finishing smartly from a cut back to the edge of the box to break the deadlock in the match.
A little under 15 minutes later and the lead was doubled, as Tieri Godame scored his first with a skillful, flicked finish from close range following a low cross.
Godame scored his second in first-half stoppage time, taking advantage of a clever cross to tap into an empty net.
In the 79th minute, debutant Godame completed his hattrick with an improvised effort from the edge of the area to complete the scoring.
