THREE Papua New Guinean players in Treigh Stewart, Khaiya Waiembi and Robert Matthias were named in the Hostplus Cup round 3 team of the week.
PNG Prime Minister’s 13 fullback Stewart starred for Melbourne Storm feeder team Brisbane Tigers as he scored a try, made two line-break assist, 136 run meters, three tackle-busts and a try assist in the 24-0 win over Ipswich Jets.
A return to home turf equaled another win for the PNG SP Hunters and Mathias was instrumental in this.
The backrower was powerful for the Hunters, amassing 186 run metres with four tackle busts, three line breaks and 21 tackles.
Despite the Central Queensland Capras 14-26 loss to Mackay Cutters, Waiembi made his presence known when he came off the bench against the Cutters on Saturday.
The new Capras recruit and former Hela Wigmen smashed his way through 199 run metres, with two tackle busts and an offload, plus 11 tackles, in a 38-minute stint.
Hunters No.6 Sakias Komati was rated as a threat despite missing out on the five-eighth role in the team of the week. Burleigh Bears playmaker Josh Rogers was named at five-eighth.
For Stewart, this would be the second time in the season that he was named in the top 17 in the competition.
The lad from Kompiam in Enga starred on his Hostplus Cup debut for Tigers in round 1 where he exploded in the second-half against Sunshine Coast Falcons to bring Tigers back into the match.
Stewart finished with a try and an assist, 205 run meters, eight tackle-busts, a line-break and two line-break assists for the Tigers on the weekend.
