KUMUL Petroleum PNG Barramundis youngster John Kariko is hoping to give his best in the upcoming tours in India, Oman and Malaysia over the next 30 days to make the final 15 ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in July.
The central native said it has been a great experience playing among the veterans since his transition from the U19 Garamuts squad last year into the senior side.
“Trainings has been tough as always but being named in the final 16 for our upcoming tours gives me an advantage to work harder and make the final cut before the World Cup.”
The 20-year-old bowler said next Tuesday would be his first anniversary since making his debut in the elite team during their test match against the United Arab Emirate in Nepal last year.
He was elevated to the senior team after a splendid performance at the 2022 ICC U19 Men’s World Cup in West Indies.
“Since making my debut last year, I have had the upper hand experience to play and learn from some of the bests in the team including our skipper Assad Vala, Norman Vanua and CJ Amini to name a few,” Kariko said of experience in the squad.
“My dad has always been a main role model who continue to encourage me to give me best and that’s what I continue to do.
“My long-term goal is to train, learn and play the best that I can to continue to maintain my spot in the national team.”
Kariko said while touring with the team, he is inspiring athletes his age and younger.
“I want to be a good role model to the younger ones after me especially those who are now emerging and are opting to make the U19 Garamuts because I came through that pathway.
“Hard work and commitment to the game pays off,” he said ahead of PNG’s tour.
