Gideon Kauke is the new Southern Highlands provincial police commander replacing Joseph Tondop.
Tondop handed over the reins to Kauke in Mendi yesterday.
He will move to Enga as the new PPC to replace George Kakas.
Tondop said policing in Southern Highlands was very challenging.
“It was very challenging in the last eight months since taking up the post,” he said. “It was not only the policing aspect but disasters, natural and manmade, that made our roles a bit thorny at times.”
He said they did not complete what they were supposed to do due to all those issues.
Kauke thanked Tondop for his leadership during trying times.
“I have learnt a lot from you during our stay in this province,” he told Tondop.
“You are a true experienced officer when it comes to policing.
“We came together and worked well with our local personnel.”
Tondop stood down as PPC after the June 14 violence which culminated in the burning of a Link Dash-8 at Mendi Airport.
Meanwhile, Tondop will take over from Kakas next week.
Kakas has been recalled to police headquarters in Port Moresby.
