MORESBY North-East MP John Kaupa has initiated a number of volleyball tournaments over the festive period in an effort to help residents of his electorate celebrate a trouble-free Christmas.
The six-day tournaments are expected to have their finals today with the presentation of prizes expected to wrap up the initiative.
Tournament official Petra Kori said it was Kaupa’s aim to help keep the residents occupied.
“During the Christmas season, many people normally get drunk and misbehave,” Kori said.
“Their actions lead to fatal accidents, brawls and all sorts of activities which are illegal or unhealthy.
“Therefore, our MP has taken measures to help people avoid being caught up in such situation by hosting the tournament so that we can keep ourselves busy during the festive season.
“Prize money will be given to the winning teams. There will be prizes for the runners-up and other teams.
“It will be a Christmas gift from our MP to families so they can use the money during the Christmas period. This is not just a tournament. It is a healthy way of keeping us confined to our respective areas as we look to avoid trouble during the festive season.”
