FESTIVE season volleyball games in the Moresby North East electorate, an initiative of MP John Kaupa, are going well with communities being appreciative of them.
Kaupa has funded the Christmas and New Year games with K200,000 from his electoral funds, of which K150,000 was for volleyball and soccer games in the entire district and K50,000 for the off-season Kaupa Cup rugby league tournament at Unagi Oval, 5-Mile.
During his electoral visit last week to various communities in the district, Kaupa has earned the accolades of the people who said that he was genuinely for the people and indeed lived among them and was a grassroots man himself.
“You are truly our father and you are one such MP who does not need police escort to come to settlements like ours here at 8-Mile,” Ken, a youth at 8-Mile who only wanted to be recognised by his first name, told Kaupa.
A mother, Grace Sine, at Wildlife, Erima shared similar sentiments saying Kaupa was truly for everybody in the electorate and actually came down to their level.
“We haven’t seen such a MP in North East before, only Kaupa can mingle around freely with people and that is what we want from all political leaders. They should know their people by name like it is with ‘JK’,” Sine said.
Kaupa said he would continue to fund social games in his electorate so long as he stays in office.
“The programme will be sustained during my term in office. Apart from pulling in services like water, power, settlement upgrading and giving individuals land titles, I have seen that sports is truly a mechanism in uniting people and getting the youth out of social woes in the communities.
“I have started off last year with sponsoring the Kaupa Cup at Unagi Oval and I funded it this again this year. I included Christmas community volleyball in my district and will keep on funding it,” Kaupa told The National.
