THE Kerema Basketball Association is targeting junior development in order to rebuild the sport in Gulf.
Junior basketball competitions have been run since 2016.
The junior games were revived after students from Kerema Secondary and Illakaraeta Primary schools to actively take part in Kerema town’s six-club competition in the men’s and women’s divisions.
The association had the support of local businessman Alex Hearo of Elore Lodge Ltd in Kerema, who affiliated the association to Basketball Federation PNG.
KBL president Asi Aua said 2018 was the final year of the executives with the association’s annual general meeting in April. Aua said his executives’ three-year term had expired and they would advertise the AGM, including positions and 2018 financial report.
The province’s other associations are Ihu and Baimuru with the Kikori and Delta Purari competitions to be revived.
“We have a lot of talent out here but the challenge is to expose and develop them.
“We’ve asked the the basketball federation to conduct coaching, referees and administration courses.
“We have plans to introduce the provincial basketball championships in Kerema with all these associations to attend,” Aua said.
