GULF Governor Chris Haiveta presented K30,000 to Kerema Rugby League in Port Moresby on Monday, with K19,400 of the money going toward affiliation and player registration fees.
Southern Confederation director Gwaibo Mairi was on hand to receive the payment for the fees.
Haiveta said he was willing to continue his support for rugby league not only Kerema but the other five local leagues as well.
“We should start recognising mass grassroots participation for player development,” he said.
Mairi said the player registration fees were important as they covered insurance costs.
He said it would safeguard players in the event of an on-field injury.
League president Emmanuel Morehari thanked Haiveta and his government for recognising the province’s premier rugby league competition.
Morehari said the remaining balance would cover the league’s equipment and administration costs.
