DAVID Nene Lembo, who fights under the name “Jungle Boy”, is seeking sponsorship to travel to Australia to take part in the Australian Muay Thai titles in March on the Gold Coast.
The 27-year-old fighter from Kopiago in Hela, who will compete in the 68kg division, has been fighting in full contact Muay Thai for the past six years in PNG and Australia.
Inspired by PNG’s best known kickboxer Stanley Nandex, Lembo took up the sport of kick boxing winning a bronze medal for his province at the 2009 PNG Games in Port Moresby.
“I was inspired to become a fighter by Nandex, and have always had the desire to represent my province and the country,” Lembo said
Since then he has switched to Muay Thai and has been training out of the Tru Warrior Gym, run by promoter Tala Kami, in Waigani.
Lembo also invites three more PNG fighters to travel to Australia for the championships if they have valid passports and have secured their own sponsors.
In 2015 Lembo spent a year in Australia training at the F16 Onyx Gym in Melbourne, under former Australian Muay Thai fighter-turned promoter Francis McDonald.
