WORLD Kickboxing Federation Papua New Guinea is looking to host regular weekend fights to develop fighters in the Highlands, says regional representative Nickson Samson Wailo.
He said kickboxing was gaining momentum across the Highlands and PNG, attracting many disadvantaged youths and workers.
Wailo said Eastern Highlands, Chimbu, Jiwaka, Western Highlands, Enga, Southern Highlands and Hela had kickboxing clubs.
He said due to limited support from the public and private sectors, the only way to develop kickboxers was through regular bouts.
Wailo said proper training facilities were needed for kickboxers to develop their skills.
“I want kickboxing to give young people a second chance in life,” he said.
“It is great for self-defence and discipline.
“The Government is focusing too much on infrastructure development and not on helping rehabilitate people.”
Wailo said sports could help change people’s attitudes.
“We are seeing many drug addicts on the streets, some are resorting to crime,” he said.
Wailo said the Government was prioritising rugby league over other sports. “Not everyone loves rugby league,” he said.
“We have kickboxing, taekwondo, basketball, soccer, karate, golf, bowling, darts, snooker and other sports that need equal support from the Government.
“All sports need funding.”
Wailo backed kickboxing to rival other sports in the Highlands as many young people were now joining the code in their respective provinces.
He called on the Government and the private sector to support their weekend bouts.
