THE Cutters are confident of a strong Digicel Cup season following their 42-0 win over a Bialla select side in their second trial match in Kimbe, West New Britain, on Saturday.
Cutters manager Freddy Kumai told The National yesterday that the coaching staff were happy with the win.
“The trials enabled our coaching staff to trim our squad of 30-plus players to 25 men,” he said.
“After the final selection is made, we will face the Kimbe Rugby League representative side this weekend to test our combinations in the forwards and backs.”
Kumai said the coaching staff and management were working hard to ensure the team kept up with their training schedules under the Covid-19 restrictions.
“So far, we are happy with the team’s performance in the first and second trials, which were held in the province,” he said.
“The condition and fitness levels of the players has been good so far despite some challenges during the pre-season.
“Wet weather was one obstacle that really affected our players and their training, but the camp on the weekend was good with the team in high spirits.
“We’re all looking forward to the start of the new season this month.”
Kumai said the Cutters were forced to break camp last month following a surge in Covid-19 cases in the country with squad members required to train in isolation.
