Chimbu Warriors hopeful for next season following unsuccessful Digicel Cup bid

THE Chimbu Warriors have reset their bid for Digicel Cup re-entry for next year after their initial bid for this year was unsuccessful.
Franchise manager Teine Korokoi told The National yesterday that the team would use this year to re-tune their bid and ensure they met all requirements to have the best possible chance for success.
Korokoi said they the Warriors were committed to returning to the country’s leading rugby league competition.
“Our bid was unsuccessful because our major sponsor, Mountain Fruit Wine, was as rival to SP Brewery,” he said.
“Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) wanted to serve the interest of their sponsor,” Korokoi added.
“After our bid was rejected, a new sponsor came on board.
“Even with our new sponsor, PNG Health Assurance, the bid was still unsuccessful.
“We haven’t had any meetings with PNG National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC) after they made the decision.
But we have accepted it and the focus now is on next year.”
Korokoi said while his management was disappointed with the rejection, they respected the PNGNRLC’s right and would re-submit their bid for the 2022 season.
“We will have a dialogue with PNGNRLC and come to an understanding.”
Korokoi said his franchise was yet to confirm if PNG Health Assurance would continue its sponsorship next year.
