Kimbe Cutters see abundance of talent in province

KIMBE Cutters say there is an abundance of talented rugby league players in West New Britain who can follow in the footsteps of SP Hunters recruits Benji Kot and Tony Worot.
Forwards Kot and Worot came through West New Britain’s Digicel Cup side where they got selected by the South Pacific Brewery-sponsored Hunters in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
Cutters chairman Freddie Kumai told The National last week that they would continue to identify and develop raw talents into semi-professional players.
“Local products Kot and Worot are great ambassadors of the Cutters,” Kumai said.
“In fact, I still think there are more talented players in West New Britain and the Cutters.
“I was hoping the 2022 Hunters pre-season squad would have more Cutters players, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case.
“But we will continue to identify and develop more talents.
“Hopefully, they reach the Hunters or Papua New Guinea Kumuls.”
Kumai said participating in the Digicel Cup was not only about winning the competition.
“It’s about building a pathway for talented players to continue their rugby league careers.
“This way, it improves the standard of the Digicel Cup.”
Meanwhile, Kot is continuing to train strongly in coach Matthew Church’s 32-man train-on squad.
The 2022 pre-season is his second with the Hunters.
Kot’s first was the pre-season in 2020 where he went on to make his Hostplus Cup (formerly Queensland Intrust Super Cup) debut.
For Worot, this is his first pre-season with the Hunters.
