OCEANIA Fight Promotions (OFP) hosted a Christmas fight night that saw seven bouts of action at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex in Port Moresby yesterday.
The main event featured Douglas Walo and Andrew Aisanga in the super welterweight division while Kauko Raka Jr went up against Joe Kara in the lightweight division which finished late last night.
An entertaining fight was the fourth bout between Daniel Ambe, from Southern Highlands, and Innocent Gimots, from Bougainville, in the welterweight division.
Gimots made his professional boxing debut after recording impressive wins at the amateur level while Ambe only made his second appearance at the professional level.
Gimots got off to a quick start using his speed and footwork that saw him score more points from jabs and hooks.
Although slower, Ambe used his big body frame to stay composed in the fight.
Gimots eventually couldn’t maintain his speed as Ambe threw some strong punches that knocked Gimots out in the fourth round.
The second bout between boxing veteran Kevin Baki’s son, Roy, and Mac Hiari was another entertaining clash that brought the crowd alive.
Roy and Hiari went toe to toe over the six three-minute rounds in the featherweight division.
Hiari dominated in the first three rounds, but Gavera finished strongly to win by unanimous decision.
Boxing patron Ben Micah said the event was hosted to honour boxing legend, the late Martin Beni, who passed away recently.
“Beni has left us but the sport is still here and the next generation must carry boxing forward,” he said.
“I thank all our sponsors, supporters and OFP for the event despite the challenges we face amid the Coronavirus pandemic.”
Micah said Prime Minister James Marape, who attended the event, was a great supporter of boxing in the country.
